NOTICE TO OWNERS AND TENANTS OF RENTAL PROPERTY

On September 26, 2016, Nelsonville City Council adopted Ordinance 39-16 which required owners of rental property to have their properties meet minimum standards. Meeting those standards is a requirement to maintain a rental property and be issued a rental permit.

The ordinance says in part that

“…the adoption of this Title will protect the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Nelsonville by setting minimum standards for all structures and premises and by establishing minimum requirements for safe and sanitary maintenance of rental property structures, equipment, and facilities for light, ventilation, space, heating, sanitation, protection from the elements, life safety, safety from fire and other hazards and fixing the responsibility of owners, operators and occupants…”.

Inspections are conducted on a “complaint only” basis

Complaints will only be accepted in writing

Tenants must be current on rental payments or have rent in escrow at Athens Municipal Court for an inspection to be conducted
